Toni Onley Gallery

I am pleased to once again dip into the vault and share a selection of some of the donations the gallery has received over the past few of years. An important part of our mandate is to collect and preserve examples of our region’s rich and diverse art history. Over the last number of years, the gallery has been the recipient of numerous interesting, wonderful and sometimes valuable works of art, many of which I hope to share with the community over the coming year.

One of the great pleasures of these exhibits is the opportunity it provides to learn more about the lives of the artists whose work we have in or collection, adding not only to our knowledge but also to the scholarship of our region’s art history.  While many of these artists may have since passed away, we are lucky that there are many people within our community who knew them and are able to provide first hand information and greater context and understanding of their work and legacy.

Some of these artists are not well known to us and it’s difficult to judge the importance of an artistic legacy based on only a few examples of their work. This is the bane of many an artist’s legacy as their work has more often than not been dispersed and its hard to put together a body of work which is reflective of their artistic development.

In an effort to help us preserve and promote our collection, we invite your participation in the process and I ask that you please contact us if you have any additional information to add on any of the artists whose work you see in our collection. This can be a personal anecdote, photos, news clippings, exhibit invites, letters or perhaps a work in your collection that you would be interested in donating or providing us with a photo for our files.

Our long term goal is to document all the works in our collection and make them available to the public through our enhanced website. Brittney Reum has begun the diligent process of finding  all the information she can on the artists whose work we have displayed. Her efforts have already started to bear fruit providing us with new information that will add to our knowledge base and understanding of these artists and their contemporaries.

Thank you to all who have made donations to our collection and I ask that you please contact me if you have any information you feel would help build our knowledge and understanding of any of the artists in our growing collection.
