Bright, colourful & whimsical wallart, best describe Kena’s acrylic paintings. Not one to work within the confines of the canvas, her mixed media artwork flows beyond the edges of the canvas. After completing her paintings, she attaches plasma cuts of welded, steel shapes to complete her most unusual “wallart”.
Kena was born in Penticton in 1952. Living in the Okanagan most of her life, she attended the Fine Arts program, some 30 years ago, at Okanagan College in Kelowna. At the same time, she taught evening & weekend batik courses at the college and ran a successful boutique, “Artwear Okanagan” with 4 other artisans. After a 15 year hiatus from the art scene, she & husband, Lawrence moved back to Penticton where she has been able to pursue her passion for art once again. Kena has traded in her wax, dyes & fabric for mild steel, canvas & acrylics. Sharing the metal shop with her husband, the metal bits are plasma cut, welded & torched creating a patina. They are then attached to the wooden frame, often spilling out over the borders of the canvas. A fascination with the relationship of shapes is evidenced in her textural & colourful “wallart”. A light hearted & whimsical approach is what she wishes to express. Her work has been exhibited at Hambleton Galleries, Kelowna, The Art Ark, Kelowna, BC Festival of the Arts, Province wide tour, Expo 1986, Vancouver BC, Red Rooster Winery, Penticton, BC, “Evening of Art”, Giardino’s, Penticton BC, SOPA Fine Art Gallery, Kelowna BC & Penticton Art Gallery, Penticton BC. Commissions are the Naramata Heritage Hotel, Naramata BC. Currently her work is displayed at Red Rooster Winery Gallery, The Bench Artisan Market & Van Dop Gallery, New Westminster, BC. Her artwork can be found in collections throughout Canada, USA, Australia, Mexico & Switzerland.
